State Rep. Ken Borton successfully secured $2.5 million in the newly approved state budget to support fish habitat restoration efforts in the Manistee and Au Sable rivers, two of Michigan’s most renowned trout streams.
The investment, requested by Borton, will fund critical infrastructure upgrades and restoration projects designed to improve aquatic habitat, strengthen the long-term health of the river systems, and preserve the watersheds for future generations. The funding will also help sustain the region’s tourism and outdoor recreation economy, which rely heavily on a healthy river ecosystem.
“Securing this funding is a major victory for both residents and people throughout the state who care deeply about protecting our natural waterways,” said Borton (R-Gaylord). “Restoring our river environments is necessary for protecting our natural resources and promoting economic growth in the region. Our waterways are acclaimed for trout fishing, and we have a clear obligation to make sure we are doing all we can to create a pristine river environment.”
The new state budget passed in the state House with Rep. Borton’s support on Friday morning. The budget bills now await Gov. Whitmer’s signature to become law.
