A recently approved resolution sponsored by state Rep. Jay DeBoyer is an ode to the state’s past while recognizing success in the present.

DeBoyer’s House Resolution 224 declared April 18 as Champions Day in Michigan. The day first came about in 1935 during an extraordinary time for sports in the state that featured a slew of remarkable achievements and triumphs.

Michigan witnessed several historic victories that year, including the rise of Joe Louis in the professional boxing world, the Detroit Tigers winning their first World Series, the Detroit Lions securing their first NFL championship and the Detroit Red wings capturing their first NHL Championship. In 1936, Governor Frank Fitzgerald declared April 18 as Champions Day to commemorate the accomplishments and President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared Detroit the “City of Champions.”

“These historic achievements occurring in such rapid succession not only brought immeasurable joy to people in our state, but unified communities and instilled a sense of resilience and hope during challenging times,” said DeBoyer, of Clay Township. “The inspiration could be felt throughout our state. With the newfound success of the Detroit Lions and the success of the University of Michigan’s football team, I think it’s time to recognize the champions who have come through our state and many people throughout our state are very proud of.”
