The new Turtle Woods county park in Troy now has a planned fall 2027 opening.

The project received a $2.17 million grant through the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund to facilitate acquisition of the approximately 70-acre property. State Representative Tom Kuhn (R-Troy) supported the grant for the park, which is located within his district.

“The Natural Resources Trust Fund allows us to preserve important natural spaces and expand recreational opportunities in our community,” Kuhn said. “I supported this grant because Turtle Woods preserves our natural landscapes and ensures residents can continue to enjoy them as a public resource for years to come.”

The project recently reached two major milestones. Oakland County Parks completed its acquisition of Turtle Woods, and the Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission approved a concept plan for the property July 15.

Located north of Square Lake Road between John R and Dequindre roads, Turtle Woods will be the first Oakland County park in Troy. Plans call for accessible trails and boardwalks, a trailhead, parking, restrooms, wayfinding signs and educational features.

The Troy School District contributed $1.87 million in property value to provide the match for the $2.17 million state grant. Six Rivers Land Conservancy secured and held the properties during the grant process before transferring them to Oakland County Parks after the funding and sale agreements were completed.

Oakland County Parks acquired the approximately 70-acre natural area as well as an adjoining 1.67-acre parcel planned for the park entrance, parking area and trailhead.

Development of the park is estimated at nearly $2.9 million, separate from the property acquisition. The project will next move through final design, competitive bidding and construction authorization. Construction is tentatively expected to begin in spring 2027, with the park scheduled to open in fall 2027.

“Turtle Woods is a unique piece of Troy, and preserving it while opening it to greater public use is a win for the community,” Kuhn said. “Once complete, this park will give residents more opportunities to get outdoors, learn about our natural environment and enjoy this property for years to come.”
